On May 11, Lakehill hosted the Bowls South Island President’s Cup tournament.
This is a mixed triples contest, with all players being on the executive of their respective clubs. Ten of the eleven BSI clubs were represented – Vic West could not make it – and the tournament was played in glorious weather, which Lakehill had specially arranged with Environment Canada.
The final victors were the team from Canadian Pacific: Gord Folka, Verlie Martin and Lorne Carnes. Second were Oak Bay (Brent Merchant, Ron Harmer, Susi Merchant) and third were Burnside (Dan Bitterlich, Katharine Krystalowich, Bunny Bentee).
Lakehill (Judy Currie, Kevin Neary, Lesley Bainbridge) proved the perfect hosts, allowing their opponents to win both games.
Much praise was lavished on our green, our clubhouse, our friendliness and Margot’s extraordinary fusion lunch, whose main feature was a curried beef spaghetti chili casserole, which went down well in every sense.
As the Chair of BSI rotates among the clubs, we can look forward to hosting this tournament again in 2035.
Meanwhile kudos and thanks to our extraordinary team of volunteers, proving the adage that many hands do indeed make light work.
