Opening Day – April 18/26

April 22, 2026

Sunday afternoon 18th April was a time of new starts and old memories. The Mayor of Saanich came to roll the opening bowl of the outdoor season and, as we’ve all been conditioned to think that bowling starts at 1 pm, we were there half an hour earlier he was, and began before the season started, so to speak. He arrived on his bike, was welcomed, coached and got a perfect wick with his first bowl, to everyone surprise and delight.

Nearly 40 people turned out, some to play and some to provide our refreshments, which came after four ends. There was a splendidly decorated cake for the occasion.

After tea and before the last four ends, we gathered to remember George Schellenberg. His daughter-in-law and granddaughter were with Alice for the ceremony. Alice spoke about George’s love of bowls and of the Club. Then Nick and Alice’s granddaughter screwed his plaque to the chosen bench. Sirish told the story of a tournament that George, Sirish and Sue Ennis won to put Lake Hill’s name on the trophy. “I won’t say how often I heard that story ” Alice said with a big smile.
Everybody, including Alice, went back to bowl and her granddaughter said she’d come to the Open House.

It was an afternoon of reconnecting with each other and with our bowls and our game. There was lots of laughter and not too much attention paid to the score…not this time!
